About the Scholarship

The Opportunities

UC Irvine has several nationally recognized interdisciplinary programs that allow individuals to match academic interests with community service and action. Students may, but are not limited to, work with well-known faculty who conduct research and teach in such organizations as:

  • Global Peace and Conflict Studies
  • Center for the Study of Morality and Ethics
  • The da Vinci Research Center for Learning Through the Arts
  • Center for the Study of Democracy
  • Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine
  • Center for Unconventional Security Affairs

UCI Dalai Lama Scholars will accrue knowledge and experience to become ethical, peace-building leaders as they enter the workforce and move out into the community.

Dalai Lama Fellows

This unique UCI scholarship served as the model and catalyst for the launch of the international Dalai Lama Fellows program. UCI is now partnering with Dalai Lama Fellows to support exceptional students committed to advancing the values of compassion, contemplation, courage, interconnectedness, collaboration, humility and service. The recipient of the UCI Dalai Lama Scholarship becomes part of the Dalai Lama Fellows global community and benefits from a generous grant for project costs and guidance for project implementation.

Through this partnership, UCI and Dalai Lama Fellows support exceptional UCI undergraduate students who want to design and launch ambitious “compassion-in-action” projects aimed at engaging campus and/or community members in order to increase their awareness in one or more of the following areas: ethics, compassionate leadership, local and global responsibility, and/or peace. Preference will be given to projects that specifically target one or more of the following areas: (a) promoting cooperation across religions and cultures; (b) diminishing violence; (c) alleviating poverty; and (d) protecting the environment.

Amount of Award

The Dalai Lama Scholar will receive an award of up to $10,000 from UCI for fees for 2012-2013 (depending on level of financial need) and a grant of up to $10,000 from the Dalai Lama Fellows to support project costs. The project must be completed during 2012-2013.

Criteria for Selection

The scholarship seeks to support students who have progressed in their academic study and personal achievements so as to have a record of intellectual distinction and service to the community.
