About the Scholarship
The XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship Fund is comprised of
donations from private citizens who define leadership as it
relates to ethics, peace and positive national and global relations.
This scholarship will be awarded
to UCI undergraduate juniors and seniors who demonstrate knowledge
of, academic work and belief in these ideals. The students will
have advanced their particular studies and interests to a point
of readiness for praxis in the community.
The Opportunities
UC Irvine has several nationally recognized interdisciplinary
programs that allow individuals to match academic interests
with community service and action. Students may, but are not
limited to, work with well-known faculty who conduct research
and teach in such organizations as:
- Global Peace and Conflict Studies
- Center for the Study of
Morality and Ethics
- The da Vinci Research Center for Learning
Through the Arts
- Center for the Study of Democracy
- Susan Samueli Center for
Integrative Medicine
- Center for Unconventional Security Affairs
- The Newkirk Center
for Science and Society
- Center for Health Policy and Research
UCI Dalai Lama Scholars will accrue knowledge and experience
to become ethical, peace-building leaders as they enter the
workforce and move out into the community.
Criteria for Selection
Scholarship support of up to $10,000 (includes up to $7,500 for UCI fees for 2008-2009 and up to $2,500 for costs associated with the project proposed by the student as part of the application) may be available for
up to two years. Scholarship funds are intended to support
academic and community project activities.
The scholarship
seeks to support students who have progressed in their academic
study and personal achievements so as to have a record of
intellectual distinction and service
to the
community. This will serve to assist in the demonstration
of the applicant’s personal characteristics of honesty,
integrity, fairness, and compassionate service to others.
Applicants with theoretic and applied interests in ethics
and leadership may come from any academic discipline.
Scholarships are available to both new and continuing UC Irvine
junior and senior students of all nationalities.
The eligibility
requirements for the scholarship are:
• Must have completed a minimum of 90 units of UCI-accepted coursework
• Must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average in UCI-accepted coursework
Applicants
must complete a 500-word essay illustrating their interest in any of the following
areas: ethics, compassionate leadership, local and global
responsibility, and peace. The essay should demonstrate how
