“How can we develop compassion and accept it as guiding principle, when the world order and economy are run on principles of competition? This is indeed a big question. I believe that the answer can be found on the basis of awareness: we should meet and discuss this more often, in this way we can gradually resolve it.”

— HIS HOLINESS THE XIV DALAI LAMA, TENZIN GYATSO
Compassion or Competition: A Discussion on Human Values in Business and Economics

11:00 am to 3:30 pm
Luncheon and Panel Discussion

Spirit in Business, Inc.Hosted by UC Irvine in partnership with Spirit in Business, Inc. This gathering is by invitation only.

You are invited to a conversation with His Holiness
the Dalai Lama.

This conversation began October 1999 in Amsterdam at a Spirit in Business sponsored dialogue that forged the book Compassion or Competition: A Discussion on Human Values in Business and Economics. In 2004 these issues are even more pressing.

On April 16, 2004 the dialogue will deepen at UC Irvine into “Cultivating the Heart of Leadership: Designing an Economy that Works for Everyone.” Business, academic, spiritual and thought leaders will convene.

Our conversation will begin a multi-year initiative spearheaded by Spirit in Business including intimate working groups and major events. Through these conversations, a new partnership is emerging between the Dalai Lama, global business, academic and spiritual leaders and supporting world thinkers to deeply explore the issue of creating an economy that works for all. In August 2005, results from these gatherings will be explored with the Dalai Lama in Zurich, Switzerland.

Come to UC Irvine prepared to build this community and shape a common agenda. We will begin with a panel that includes Bill George, W. Brian Arthur, Barbara Krumsiek and John Graham. We will sit together with the Dalai Lama and a panel of remarkable business and academic leaders for an intimate discussion moderated by Andrew Ferguson. And then time for reflections and recommendations at the conclusion.

This will be a small, intimate gathering and is by invitation only. UC Irvine is pleased to host this dialogue in partnership with Spirit in Business. In April 21 – 23, 2002, Spirit in Business produced a World Conference about spirituality and business Business: Ethics, Mindfulness and the Bottom Line in New York City. It was a watershed event and provided the meeting ground for the launch of a global institution to further the mission and vision of Spirit in Business.
